Acoustic correlates of emotional dimensions in laughter: Arousal, dominance, and valence.Diana P. Szameitat, Chris J. Darwin, Dirk Wildgruber, Kai Alter & André J. Szameitat - 2011 - Cognition and Emotion 25 (4):599-611.
Although laughter plays an essential part in emotional vocal communication, little is known about the acoustical correlates that encode different emotional dimensions. In this study we examined the acoustical structure of laughter sounds differing along four emotional dimensions: arousal, dominance, sender's valence, and receiver-directed valence. Correlation of 43 acoustic parameters with individual emotional dimensions revealed that each emotional dimension was associated with a number of vocal cues. Common patterns of cues were found with emotional expression in speech, supporting the hypothesis (...)

The coronavirus disease pandemic fundamentally disrupted humans’ social life and behavior. Public health measures may have inadvertently impacted how people care for each other. This study investigated prosocial behavior, its association well-being, and predictors of prosocial behavior during the first COVID-19 pandemic lockdown and sought to understand whether region-specific differences exist. Participants from eight regions clustering multiple countries around the world responded to a cross-sectional online-survey investigating the psychological consequences of the first upsurge of lockdowns in spring 2020. Prosocial behavior (...)

The electric fence to cell-cycle progression: Do local changes in membrane potential facilitate disassembly of the primary cilium?Diana Urrego, Araceli Sánchez, Adam P. Tomczak & Luis A. Pardo - 2017 - Bioessays 39 (6):1600190.
Kv10.1 is a voltage‐gated potassium channel relevant for tumor biology, but the underlying mechanism is still unclear. We propose that Kv10.1 plays a role coordinating primary cilium disassembly with cell cycle progression through localized changes of membrane potential at the ciliary base. Most non‐dividing cells display a primary cilium, an antenna‐like structure important for cell physiology. The cilium is disassembled when the cell divides, which requires an increase of Ca2+ concentration and a redistribution of phospholipids in its basal region, both (...)

Limited Coping Skills, Young Age, and High BMI Are Risk Factors for Injuries in Contemporary Dance: A 1-Year Prospective Study.Diana van Winden, Rogier M. van Rijn, Geert J. P. Savelsbergh, Raôul R. D. Oudejans & Janine H. Stubbe - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
This study investigated potential risk factors (coping, perfectionism and self-regulation) for substantial injuries in contemporary dance students using a prospective cohort design, as high-quality studies focusing on mental risk factors for dance injuries are lacking. Student characteristics (age, sex, BMI, educational program and history of injury) and psychological constructs (coping, perfectionism and self-regulation) were assessed using the Performing artist and Athlete Health Monitor (PAHM), a web-based system. Substantial injuries were measured with the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center (OSTRC) Questionnaire on (...)

Attention, Not Performance, Correlates With Afterdischarge Termination During Cortical Stimulation.Ronald P. Lesser, W. R. S. Webber, Diana L. Miglioretti, Yuko Mizuno-Matsumoto, Ayumi Muramatsu & Yusuke Yamamoto - 2021 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 14.
Cortical stimulation has been used for brain mapping for over a century, and a standard assumption is that stimulation interferes with task execution due to local effects at the stimulation site. Stimulation can however produce afterdischarges which interfere with functional localization and can lead to unwanted seizures. We previously showed that cognitive effort can terminate these afterdischarges, when termination thus occurs, there are electrocorticography changes throughout the cortex, not just at sites with afterdischarges or sites thought functionally important for the (...)

Formal accounts of negotiation tend to invoke the strategic models of conflict which have been impressively developed by game theorists in this half-century. For two decades, however, research on artificial intelligence (AI) has produced a different formal picture of the agent and of the rational deliberations of agents. AI's models are not based simply on intensities of preference and quantities of probability. AI's models consider that agents use language in various ways, that agents use and convey knowledge, that agents plan, (...)

_341_ _Objectives: _In patients with multivessel disease both the detection of the culprit lesion and the exact allocation are important preconditions for sufficient treatment and improved outcome. In a vessel based approach the combination of quantitative coronary angiography and fractional flow reserve measured by a pressure wire should be advantageous compared to myocardial SPECT, as morphological and functional information is delivered simultaneously. Therefore our aim was to evaluate MS in the detection and allocation of hemodynamically significant stenoses obtained by the (...)

Media and gender: Constructing feminine identities in a postmodern culture.Diana Damean - 2006 - Journal for the Study of Religions and Ideologies 5 (14):89-94.
In the postmodern era the impact media have on our lives is continuously growing. Not only do media reflect reality, but they also shape and reconstruct it according to the public's hopes, fears or fantasies. Reality itself is not the sum of all objective processes and things, but it is socially constructed by the discourses that reflect and produce power. On the other hand, the public does not simply accept or reject the media messages, but interprets them according to its (...)

Simple decision-tree tool to facilitate author identification of reporting guidelines during submission: a before–after study.Diana M. Marshall, Ines Lopes de Sousa & Daniel R. Shanahan - 2017 - Research Integrity and Peer Review 2 (1).
BackgroundThere is evidence that direct journal endorsement of reporting guidelines can lead to important improvements in the quality and reliability of the published research. However, over the last 20 years, there has been a proliferation of reporting guidelines for different study designs, making it impractical for a journal to explicitly endorse them all. The objective of this study was to investigate whether a decision tree tool made available during the submission process facilitates author identification of the relevant reporting guideline.MethodsThis was (...)

Open peer commentary on the article “What Can the Global Observer Know?” by Diana Gasparyan. Upshot: From the standpoint of epistemology-centered operationalist, pragmatist, constructivist perspectives, which are firmly grounded in the capacities of limited observers, all omniscient observers in realist ontologies and theologies appear both completely unattainable in practice and conceptually incoherent in their formulations. Nevertheless, these ideas may be useful heuristically.

Open peer commentary on the article “What Can the Global Observer Know?” by Diana Gasparyan. Upshot: Even well-founded criticism of the notion of the global observer does not immediately challenge contemporary metaphysical realism. A viable alternative to the latter, and to far-reaching constructivist positions on the other side, originates in replacing global observation with actual and possible local observations.
